What to look for when buying a treadmill.
1. Space
Space should be a major consideration when looking for a treadmill. How much space do you have? Your space should be enough for you to comfortably exercise. Ensure you get it right by measuring out the space you intend to use beforehand.
Use this information as a guide when shopping to make sure that whatever treadmill you choose fits your space.
2. Type of workout
Which type of exercise do you plan to do? Do you prefer to run, walk or jog?
Deciding on this early on will save you a lot of time and money. Heavy exercises such as running require treadmills with higher horsepower than light exercises such as walking.
In addition, the type of workout will also determine your space as runners generally require a running belt of 60-inches compared to walkers who only require about 50-inches of running space.
3. Cost
While you can get lots of treadmills at a throw-away price, these should not be your first option if you can help it.
A budget treadmill under $600 is quite the bargain. This treadmill is most likely not to hold up well to daily use. You want to use it occasionally for light jogging or walking.
With $1000 or less, you’re not getting the best of the best but this type of treadmill holds up well to jogging/walking exercise. However, it will not include lots of high-end features.
With $2000 – $15000 and less, you’re getting high-quality almost commercially quality treadmills. These come with powerful motors and can withstand daily use. A great price point for daily runners and joggers to start looking.
4. Motor
The motor is what powers the running belt aka track of your treadmill. This is often described as horsepower and abbreviated as HP in most treadmill descriptions.
This determines how much power a motor can continuously put out when in use. A powerful motor means more speed. For most home use treadmills, this will range anywhere between 2.0HP to 4.5HP.
The type of workout you do often will determine which HP is best for you.
Walkers will require about 2.0HP or more, 2,5HP or more for joggers, and at least 3.0 HP or more for seasoned runners.
If you weigh more than 200-pounds, you want to add on about 0.5HP to avoid your motor running at full capacity which can cause it to wear and tear.
